GOAL 1, OBJECTIVE 1.2
Meaningful Learning & Engagement
Description: Learning to design meaningful, engaging educational experiences through game development fundamentally altered my approach to instructional design. Prior to this course, I had no idea how much thought went into creating a game for educational purposes. My prototypeYes, Chef! is a 2-D digital top-down shooter-type game, created for new customer service employees at CompanyName using the Construct 3 game engine. After completing a concise learner analysis, I determined the subject area and learning objectives based on a brief needs analysis provided by the company. Then I designed game objectives, mechanics, and scoring to reinforce the business's training needs. Yes, Chef! is the third game created for IS_LT 7384, Designing Games for Learning, and was a culminating activity for the course objectives. The game includes a light story with a beginning, middle, and end defining how a player progresses to the end of the game. Along with learning the technical aspects of Construct 3, the prototype required substantial asset creation for the game. These included a background, player character, dynamic conveyor belt, and multiple shooter elements. The prototype also includes a title screen and credits, a scoring mechanism, and opportunities to develop further levels, which would elevate the learner’s cycle of expertise.
Reflection: Prototypes for the two games created earlier in the course felt much more like I was forcing the game to be something it wasn’t, just to match the gaming platform we were tasked with learning. This led me to reexamine what I could bring to this prototype to take fuller advantage of the Construct 3 platform and push my skills further. Player feedback taught me to focus more directly on integrating learners’ needs with the platform’s strengths. This approach works better than forcing the platform to do something it wasn't designed for. This project demonstrates my development in designing educational games for meaningful learning and promoting student engagement.
